The Story of Crystal

While doing some personal family research, I happened upon this manuscript at the Island Falls Historical Society. Although I knew of its existence, I had not seen it in years. Although not part of my original plan, I decided to digitize it for my personal family research project. My goal was to recreate this exactly as Carlton wrote it.

We should all be thankful to Carlton J. Corliss for compiling this. In 1937, this was an immense task — there were no computers, no internet. All research was done by writing letters or getting on a train. I do not know how long it took Mr. Corliss to complete this, but I am sure it was a lengthy project.

As you read this story, I would offer this advice: take the time to read it as written. Don’t skip around. Read it through from start to finish, even if it takes a few sessions. Later you will want to go back and explore the sections that piqued your interest. Also, pay special attention to the Preface and let his words sink in.

I would also like to thank the Island Falls Historical Society for their great care of this manuscript. It should be noted that they have other scrapbooks containing pictures and information relating to the history of Crystal. It is a treasure trove of local history, and I highly recommend paying them a visit.
